Designed way back in 1945, the Michael shoes are a classique bit of French footwear from . Film-fans might recognise these from old French thrillers, but they were also popular amongst what was known as the BCBG in the 80s. BCBG stands for ‘bon chic, bon genre,’ meaning ‘good style, good class’. A bit like the Paninari in Italy, this is used to describe the well-off youth around Paris.
But let’s get back to the shoes. They’ve got a stout, moccasin construction and a chunky sole with what’s known as a Norwegian welt. Apparently even more waterproof than the Goodyear welt, these are the preserve of only the cream of the footwear crop.
